SANDY LAKE — An 18-year-old man is facing several sexual assault offences in Sandy Lake First Nation.
Nishnawbe Aski Police Service became aware of a series of sexual assault incidents on Nov. 6.
The assaults are alleged to have occurred between March and October of 2024.
The incidents involved one male suspect and one female victim and police say the victim and the accused were in a relationship at the time of the incidents.
According to police, their investigation revealed the victim had been allegedly sexually assaulted on five occasions and physically assaulted twice.
The NAPS Northwest crime unit is now involved in the investigation.
The suspect was arrested without incident on Thursday and charged with five counts of sexual assault and two counts of assault.
The accused’s name is being withheld in accordance to the Youth Criminal Justice Act as he was still a minor when a number of the incidents are alleged to have occurred.
The name of the accused is also being withheld to protect to the identity of the victim.
The accused appeared in bail court on Friday and was released with a future court appearance date.
