Police recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested a man wanted for a domestic assault who was fleeing the United States into Canada.

THUNDER BAY – A tip from an iPhone led to the arrest of a man wanted for aggravated assault and attempting to flee into Canada in a stolen vehicle.

Ontario Provincial Police said at 2:21 a.m. on Sunday, Rainy River District OPP received an automated crash notification, which led them to an abandoned vehicle on Atwood Worthington Road 1.

The vehicle was linked to an aggravated domestic assault in the United States.

A male suspect had broken a woman’s arm and stolen her vehicle. While attempting to flee, he drove across a frozen river from the United States into Canada, only to get stuck in a snowbank.

Two officers tracked the suspect on foot and found him hiding in a herd of cows in a farm field. The man had also fallen through the ice and was soaking wet.

The accused was arrested and handed over to the Canadian Border Services Agency, where paperwork was filed and the man was handed over to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office.
