Bombers open title defence with shutout win over Stars

Red Lake, Fort Frances also pick up victories on opening night of the SIJHL season.

SIOUX LOOKOUT – The defending champion Sioux Lookout Bombers picked up where they left off last season.

Ty Lone, Jonah Smith, Owen cotter and Aaron Berschinger each scored goals on Friday night, leading the Bombers to a 4-0 win over the visiting Thunder Bay North Stars, kicking off the 2024-25 Superior International Junior Hockey League campaign.

Matthew Spencer-Shal made 31 saves to lead the way in net, earning his fourth career SIJHL shutout.

Keenan Marks was between the pipes for Thunder Bay, stopping 47 of 51 shots directed his way by the Bombers.

Red Lake 7, Ironwood 6: Nathan Dann capped a wild contest between the Miners and Lumberjacks, scoring the game-winning goal, his second of the night, with 2:54 to go in regulation to give Red Lake the win in the season-opener for both teams.  Dann finished the night with two goals and two helpers. Kai Hughes also scored a pair for the Miners, who trailed 3-1 after one, but scored four times in less than 10 minutes in the second to take a 5-3 lead. Jack Hanna had a pair for Ironwood.

Fort Frances 7, Kenora 1: Whittaker Heart had a pair of goals and Brady Krentz picked up two assists to lead the Lakers past the second-year Islanders. Larry Flett had the lone goal for host Kenora. Gunner Paradis stopped 28 of 29 shots to pick up the win for Fort Frances in net.

The Kam River Fighting Walleye will make their season-debut at home on Saturday night, welcoming the Dryden Ice Dogs to the Norwest Arena. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
