Charges laid for theft of mail from post office

OPP have charged a La Vallee Township woman in connection with the theft of mail from the post office in Fort Frances.

FORT FRANCES — An area resident has been charged in connection with the theft of mail and parcels from the post office in Fort Frances.

Ontario Provincial Police charged a 56-year-old woman from La Vallee Township after a joint investigation with Canada Post's Security Investigation Services.

Police received a complaint from postal officials on Dec. 4 that a contract cleaner was potentially stealing mail.

They executed a search warrant at a residence and an associated vehicle, and recovered a quantity of stolen property including gift cards, rebate coupons and parcels.

Over 60 victims have been identified to date, but the number is expected to grow as the investigation continues.

The accused is charged with theft from mail sent by post, possession of an article stolen from mail, theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime worth over $5,000, and careless storage of a firearm.

The woman made a bail court appearance and was released from custody pending her next appearance date, which is Jan. 29, 2024 at the Fort Frances courthouse.
