CN freight train derails in Northwestern Ontario

No one was injured when multiple cars carrying potash left the track at Emo.

EMO — A CN freight train went off the tracks in an incident at Emo, west of Fort Frances, early Tuesday.

A railway spokesperson told Newswatch preliminary reports indicate all the derailed units are transporting potash.

She said there are no reported dangerous goods involved.

The spokesperson did not indicate how many cars were involved, but OPP reported that 14 were derailed.

Emo Mayor Harold McQuaker said seven or eight cars had left the tracks at about 7:30 a.m.

CN crews and emergency responders were all dispatched to the scene but OPP said no one reported injured, and there was no fire.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

An police spokesperson said that as a result of the derailment, some crossings were closed, but McQuaker said in an interview later in the morning that all crossing were open.

"There's just rail damage. Contractors are en route to start repairing, so everything's being looked after in a timely fashion," he said.

There was no immediate indication from CN as to how long it would take to return the railway track to normal operations.

CN has deployed multiple resources, including railway police, transportation, track maintenance, engineering and signals teams.

In recent years, local officials have expressed concerns about safety because of a number of derailments in the Rainy River district, including one in 2020 that saw tank cars carrying crude oil leave the tracks at Emo.
