Confirmed forest fires near Sioux Lookout and Red Lake

Active fire season remains below average compared to previous years.

NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO – Provincial fires crew has been dispatched to two locations near Red Lake and Sioux Lookout.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services are reporting a 0.5-hectare fire in the Opasquia Provincial Park west of Cocos Lake. Fire services are reporting that the small blaze is not under control.

At the moment, fire services are observing a 1.5-hectare fire around Sakwaso Lake near Sioux Lookout.

The wildland fire hazard is mainly low to moderate throughout the region.

However, some areas around Nipigon, Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay are seeing high fire hazards.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind the public to use caution when sitting around the personal fire pits. It is strongly recommended to dispose of yard waste and wood debris at the landfill and follow Outdoor Burning Regulations.
