KENORA — City workers discovered a disappointing sight Friday morning when they came upon a mass of turned over grave markers in the veterans' area of the cemetery.

“It is very disappointing that people would choose to disrespect a cemetery like that,” said Heather Pihulak, the city's director of corporate services.

Pihulak said there is no indication if the vandalism was done by a single individual or a group.

“We just know that between the time the crews left [Thursday] at the end of the day to the time they reported back [Friday] morning, there was vandalism overnight at some point in time,” said Pihulak.

Ontario Provincial Police are currently investigating the incident.

The area is taken care of by Branch 12 of the Royal Canadian Legion, which thanked the city for notifying them of the vandalism on their Facebook page.

Legion members are currently working to restore the markers to their original positions.

“We've offered assistance to the Legion as well if they would like us to assist with that recovery,” Pihulak said.
