A 23-year-old faces charges after a handgun was found during a traffic stop earlier this month.

Provincial police said officers in the Rainy River district stopped a vehicle on Highway 11 near Couchiching First Nation on Sept. 3, suspecting a suspended driver.

The officers found an open alcoholic beverage, along with a .22-calibre handgun, police added.

The accused has been charged with unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon, driving while suspended, and driving with open alcohol.

The accused has been released from custody and is due to appear in a Fort Frances court in October.
