THUNDER BAY — As the restricted fire zone moved into its second month in Northern Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reported 11 new forest fires in the Northwest Region over the Canada Day holiday weekend.
Nine of the outbreaks were found on Monday, while two were discovered on Sunday.
They occurred in the Nipigon, Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout and Kenora districts.
The largest of the new fires is a 10-hectare blaze located about 56 kilometres southwest of Fort Hope.
As of Sunday evening there were 47 active fires in the Northwest, including 15 that are not under control, one being held, six under control, and 25 that are being observed.
The wildland fire hazard in Northwestern Ontario currently ranges from moderate to extreme.
