UPDATE: Fatal injury at Rainy River Mine under investigation

New Gold Inc. suspends operation after employee was fatally injured.

TORONTO — A fatality has been reported by New Gold Inc. at its Rainy River mine. 

In a release, New Gold Inc. expressed its deepest regrets when informing the public that on July 24, an industrial accident took the life of one of New Gold’s employees.

According to the release, an employee operating a piece of equipment in the open pit was fatally injured.

The Ministry of Labour reports that the employee was "struck by material."

Two investigators from the Ministry are on the scene to assess the cause of the accident.

Operations at the mine have been voluntarily suspended for the time being.

New Gold Inc. said, “The health, safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority.”

The company said they will provide additional information as appropriate.
