The federal government is providing $1.6 million for a number of different projects led by municipalities across the region.
The announcement for eight projects was made in Fort Frances on Thursday morning by Patty Hajdu, the minister responsible for FedNor, and Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Marcus Powlowski.
The largest share of the funding is being directed to Sioux Lookout, which is receiving $664,000 to extend municipal water and sewer services to the Hillcrest commercial site, which will help meet demand for development.
Fort Frances is getting $365,000 for two projects — one to complete a microgrid feasibility study, and the other to develop a strategic plan.
Dryden will also be receiving funding for two projects, amounting to a total of $245,000. One of those initiatives is the funding of a community capacity study and business and services gap analysis, while the other is for a food aggregation and distribution hub feasibility study.
Rainy River will be provided with $216,000 for the hiring of a regional economic development officer to assist the district over a three-year period.
Kenora will get $90,000 to develop a comprehensive strategic planning process for a five-year period.
Machin is receiving $45,000 to support the development of a community improvement plan.
