SANDY LAKE – Film and television star Adam Beach will be master of ceremonies Friday at this remote First Nation as it celebrates getting hooked up to the Ontario power grid.

Wataynikaneyap Power, First Nations-controlled company with a mission “to provide reliable and affordable power to residents, businesses and industry in the region," is holding the celebration on Indigenous Peoples Day.

Sandy Lake, northeast of Red Lake, is one of 12 communities that now get electricity from the grid rather than from diesel-burning generators thanks to Wataynikaneyap Power's $1.9-billion transmission line project.

Wataynikaneyap means “line that brings light” in Anishiniiniimowin (Oji-Cree).

The Manitoba-born Beach's film credits include key roles in historical dramas Windtalkers and Flags of our Fathers, comedies Smoke Signals and Joe Dirt, and Suicide Squad.

Past TV work includes a lead role in the CBC's Arctic Air, playing Det. Chester Lake on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the role of Tommy Flute on HBO's Big Love.

He has a lead role in the Canadian thriller Exile.
