SIOUX LOOKOUT - High water levels have caused several roads to close because of washouts or flooding. The worst of the damage is Highway 105 by the Chukuni Bridge, where a section of the road has been washed away.
Although work on the culvert collapse is underway with crews filling in the wide gap which separates Highway 105, the fix is only temporary and may not hold under the pressure of the fast-flowing water. The road is expected to have one lane in operation by this afternoon.
Sol Mamakwa, the NDP candidate for Kiiwetinoong, calls for every resource required to fix the access road to Red Lake that was washed out Sunday.
"People in Red Lake can't enter or leave. The only road to and from town has been washed out, isolating the community again. We need to get this fixed right away. There is no time to waste. People need road access now to ensure the passage of essential goods and services into town. The community that depends on this road has the right to travel safely.”
New Democrats will ensure that vital northern roads are adequately maintained and declare Highways 11/17 Class 1 Highways that must be cleared within 8 hours of snowfall. The NDP will also move ahead with vital road construction projects like the four-laning of Highway 69, Highway 11/17, and the Thunder Bay Expressway.
