Forest fire smoke prompts air quality advisory

Forest fire smoke will be taking over the city and much of the region.

THUNDER BAY — Poor air quality is expected across the region Wednesday due to high levels of air pollution from forest fire smoke.

A large cluster of fires west of Ontario is the big contributing factor to a large wall of smoke that is being pushed east and across the region.

Specifically, smoke from fires coming from northern Alberta and the Great Slave Lake region in the Northwest Territories are to be blamed.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for a large portion of Northwestern Ontario, spanning from the Manitoba border to east of Thunder Bay, and including most of the Far North.

Currently, in Ontario, there are 37 active fires in northwestern Ontario, as an additional blaze was confirmed and is being monitored as of August 14.

Active fires can be viewed with the Ontario Forest Fire Info Map
