THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for much of Northwestern Ontario, due to smoke from forest fires.

The smoke is causing or is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility that will persist through Wednesday and into Thursday in some areas.

In its advisory, the federal agency said wildfire smoke holds the potential to affect human health even in low concentrations.

People with lung disease or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and those who work outdoors are at higher risk, however individuals respond differently to smoke.

Mild irritation and discomfort are the most common symptoms, but usually disappear when smoke dissipates.

If breathing becomes uncomfortable, a health care provider should be contacted.
