THUNDER BAY – A date has been set for the inquest into the death of a man who died in OPP custody in Atikokan four years ago.
On Thursday, it was announced the inquest into the death of Aaron Fisk, 37, will begin on Dec. 9 via video conference at 10 a.m.
It’s expected to last five days with Bonnie Goldberg as presiding officer. Peter Napier and Uko Abara will be inquest counsel. Four witnesses are expected to testify.
Fisk died on Oct. 18, 2020 at the Atikokan hospital while in police custody.
An inquest, which will examine the circumstances surrounding Fisk’s death, is mandatory under the Coroners Act. It may result in a jury making recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.
The inquest was announced last month.
The Special Investigations Unit investigated Aaron Fisk's death, and announced in August 2021 that it had found no grounds to charge two OPP officers, saying the officers did not fail to care for his well-being while he was suffering the effects of a drug overdose.
The offences taken into consideration by the SIU included failure to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing death.
