KENORA — Kelvin Boucher-Chicago is running for public office again, this time as an Independent candidate in the April 28 federal election.
The Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation member and Kenora resident has had his name on the ballot in three previous federal elections, a provincial election and a municipal election.
He ran under the New Blue Party banner in the 2022 Ontario general election and finished last among five candidates in Kenora-Rainy River with fewer than 400 votes.
“My issue has always been the less fortunate people,” Boucher-Chicago, a carpenter and single father, said Friday.
“And, you know, they’re falling through the cracks and so forth, and everybody seems to be claiming to be helping them, but at the end of the day it’s always the homeless ones that’s still hanging around on the streets. They have no place to go.”
Boucher-Chicago said old approaches to social problems haven’t worked and “we need a new approach. Let’s try true compassion.”
The Conservative, Liberal, New Democratic and Green parties also have candidates on the ballot in Kenora-Kiiwetinoong, a riding with an area of approximately 256,000 square kilometres and a population of about 62,000.
