KI – Shortly after New Year's Day, KI OPP began their investigation into the death of two individuals.

In a statement released by the Independent First Nation Alliance, the investigation is still ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.

Chief Donny Morris said, “our community is grieving with the loss of so many of our members in such a short period of time. While some of these deaths were expected, many were not. Our community as a whole is shaken by this tremendous loss and our ability to provide services over the holidays has been greatly impacted. We ask that everyone respect the families’ privacy during this difficult time.”

The community of KI has suffered significant loss over the past month with an additional seven individuals having passed between December 1st, 2023 and January 1st, 2024.

KI honours the memory of Baby Childforever, Matthew Sainnawap, Sophie Cromarty, Debra McKay, Rebbecca Sakakeep, Adam McKay, and Clayton Nesh.
