MNR confirms new wildfires in the North

As an extreme heat warning blankets the province, the Ministry of Natural Resources is advising the public to be cautious with open flames.

NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO – The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has confirmed two new fires in the Northwest Region.

Red Lake 8 (RED008) is 5.1 hectares 25 kilometres west of Deer Lake and is currently not under control.

Sioux Lookout 13 (SLK013), 5 kilometres west of Tokar Lake, is 10 hectares. SLK013 is being observed.

The 0.1-hectare fire located 14 kilometres south of Manitouwadge and the 0.5-hectare fire 37 kilometres northwest of Lake Nipigon has been called out, according to MNR.

At the time, there are eight active fires in the Northwest Region and 14 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region.

Of the eight in the northwest, one fire is not under control, one fire is being held, one fire is under control while the remaining six fires are being observed.

All 14 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region are being observed in the far north.

The wildland fire hazard is moderate to high across the north with a pocket of extreme fire hazard stretching from the Manitoba border into Weeskayjahk Ohtahzhoganeeng Provincial Park except a pocket with a high fire hazard value east of Wawa.
