SIOUX LOOKOUT — Three southern Ontario men have been fined a total of almost $20,000 for illegal hunting practices in the Lac Seul area.

Charges were laid by Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers who stopped at a remote hunting camp while patrolling in an aircraft in October 2022.

A Justice of the Peace in Sioux Lookout was told that two of the men had shot a cow moose from a motorboat at a time when they were over 17 kilometres away from the member of the party who held the tag.

Ontario hunting rules require hunters to be within five kilometres of the tag-holder, and it is illegal to discharge a firearm from a motorboat.

One of the shooters was fined $9,000 and had his licence suspended for a year, while the other was fined $8,500.

The third hunter received a fine of $2,000 for unlawfully validating a tag with respect to an animal killed by another person.
