THUNDER BAY — A rare instance when a majority of NAN chiefs are all in the same place is happening in Thunder Bay.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation is holding its general assembly meeting over three days in the city, and almost all 49 chiefs or their proxies are present.
Fort William First Nation Chief Michele Solomon welcomed the assembly during the morning's grand entrance ceremony.
During her welcoming address, Solomon talked about the recent issues that have plagued some of these communities: fires, deaths and long-standing boil water advisories.
"These are issues that they've been dealing with for many years, and until there are investments made in their infrastructure, these are things that will continue to happen, sadly. And really, the government should take better action in addressing these matters in our communities."
Solomon noted it's her first general assembly as FWFN chief and she is proud to welcome them to the city.
"I just think it's really a wonderful opportunity to come here and speak to some of the chiefs and get to know them a little better. I definitely stand with them in solidarity to address the many issues they face."
Over the next three days, the agenda will cover a wide range of topics, including food security, education, community safety, and other health policy and advocacy issues.
