THUNDER BAY — Pope Francis has named Father Alan Campeau the new bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Thunder Bay.

The diocese has been without a bishop since the retirement of Fred Colli last June.

Father Campeau currently serves as the pastor of St. Joseph parish in Dryden, Immaculate Conception parish in Ignace, and Our Lady of Fatima parish in Vermilion Bay.

Bishop-elect Campeau was ordained a priest of the Diocese of London, Ontario in 1990.

In 1995, he accepted an invitation from Thunder Bay Bishop Fred Henry to move to Northwestern Ontario to help relieve the shortage of priests in the region.

According to the Diocese of London, that assignment was intended to be short-term, but he wound up serving 30 years in various parishes and missions.

He will be installed as bishop on Feb. 27.
