PIKANGIKUM — An investigation into a Superior Airways flight overrunning a runway has been completed.

The TSB (Transportation Safety Board) completed a limited-scope investigation into a Cessna 208B flight that overran the tarmac at the Pikangikum Airport on Sept. 12, 2023.

The flight was coming in from Red Lake with six passengers on board, plus the pilot.

On approach, the aircraft entered fog and made a long landing under poor visibility.

After touching down, the Cessna rolled off the end of the runway and came to rest in the grass and bushes 50 feet past the turnaround bay.

According to the report the aircraft's propeller was damaged but there were no injuries and the pilot and passengers exited "uneventfully."

It was the the pilot’s first day of work as a single pilot and only his third flight after the completion of his line indoctrination training.

The report detailed the safety actions Superior Airways took following the incident, including an additional risk assessment procedure for new captains, modifying the VFR stabilized approach criteria in the Cessna 208B SOPs and installing GPS tracking devices in all aircraft to allow monitoring of the aircraft fleet.

The full report from the TSB is available here.

The TSB report is the second this month stemming from an runway overrun in the region. The other incident took place in Kasabonica First Nation last year.
