No injuries from roof collapse at Red Apple in Sioux Lookout

Employees were able to get out of the Red Apple safely after the roof collapsed.

SIOUX LOOKOUT -- The roof of a bargain store in Sioux Lookout collapsed Thursday night.

About an hour before the Red Apple store on Front Street was scheduled to close the night, a large portion of the roof collapsed.

Sioux Lookout fire chief Robert Popovic said there were four employees and no customers inside the store at the time, and all staff managed to evacuate safely.

Emergency officials closed off the street for safety reasons.

Popovic said, although it's been a very snowy winter, flat-roofed buildings like this one should still be able to withstand the weight of the snow.

He added, it will now be up to the store's insurance company to investigate the cause.

City officials say due to the roof collapsing, Front Street between Sixth Avenue and municipal parking lot next to Red Apple will be closed temporarily.

The closure will remain in place until such time as the Red Apple building can be structurally secured.
