KENORA – Beau Helmeczi had a goal and four assists and Cohen Tangedal put up a goal and three helpers, leading the Thunder Bay North Stars past the Kenora Islanders 13-4 on Saturday night.
The win came at an opportune time, the North Stars ending a four-game losing streak in the process.
Alex Remenda had two goals and two assists, Tyler Jordan had a pair and Kendric Marshall scored twice and picked up an assist of his own in the lopsided win that handed the Islanders their 14th straight defeat.
Carter Anton, Eric Sheriff, Keagan Jones and Acoyen Fehr had singles for the North Stars, who improved to 12-6-1 on the season and are alone in fourth, a point behind the Kam River Fighting Walleye with a game in hand.
Fort Frances will visit the North Stars on Friday and Saturday night.
Fort Frances 2, Kam River 1: The Lakers spotted the Fighting Walleye a first period goal off the stick of Daxton Lang, but tied the game on a Jack Wood goal in the second and won it with 1:49 to go in the third, when Pierce Gouin beat Ashton Sadauskas with the game winner late in the third. The Fighting Walleye host Dryden on Friday night at the Norwest Arena.
Dryden 3, Sioux Lookout 2: McLaren Paulsen, the SIJHL’s leading scorer, notched his 20th of the season, one of three goals the Ice Dogs scored in a third period comeback to lead Dryden to the win. Elias Eisenbarth had tied things up 45 seconds earlier. Alex Lucas and Beau Bannerman had the Bombers goals. Max Roby had Dryden’s other tally.
Red Lake 4, Ironwood 3: Red Lake scored twice in 50 seconds in the third to knock off the host Lumberjacks by a goal. Gabe Tanton sparked the comeback bid at 12:04 of the third, with Landon van Engelen following moments later with the game winner. Matteo Salvatore, Marshall Thomas and Aidan Charron scored for Ironwood. Nathan Dunn and Ryan Heuser had the other Miners goals.
