THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay North Stars are hosting a unique kind of hockey game on Wednesday morning, one aimed at those with sensory stimulation concerns.
The Superior International Junior Hockey League team is focusing on decreased stimulation throughout their game against the Red Lake Miners, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Fort William Gardens.
The game will feature no goal horn or noise meters, no video replays or graphics, decreased microphone and music volume, no strobe-style lights, consistent lighting throughout the game and pregame and a cool-down station, a quiet area on the east side of the arena away from the seating bowl.
Sensory friendly students from both Lakehead Public Schools and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board have been invited to the game, as well as those from organizations and groups throughout the city.
“The average hockey game is not very conducive to individuals with sensitivities, but our hope is that by changing elements of the game presentation, we can introduce an entirely new audience to the game we love. Assisting individuals of all backgrounds and abilities partake in positive life experiences is a big part of fulfilling the Thunder Bay North Star’s mission,” said Mike Tallari, director of business development and community engagement with the SIJHL team.
The game will also be open to the general public.
