SANDY LAKE FIRST NATION – One person has died as the result of a house fire in Sandy Lake First Nation.

Two other occupants of the home escaped the fire, which broke out in the afternoon hours of Feb. 25 in the remote fly-in community.

The people who escaped were taken to the nursing station for evaluation and treatment of their injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police, upon arrival at the scene, observed the home was completely engulfed in flames. Community firefighters also attended and worked to extinguish the blaze.

The victim at first was unaccounted for, but human remains were discovered on Feb. 26, the day after the fire.

The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal and the OPP are involved in the investigation.

Investigators are now working toward identifying the deceased.

The investigation is ongoing.
