DEER LAKE — A police investigation into drug trafficking activity within Deer Lake First Nation has led to the arrest of two men.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS), working out of the community’s detachment, responded to a call regarding suspected drug trafficking activity from individuals in a white pick-up truck on Thursday evening.

After locating the vehicle and identifying the two men, officers said a further investigation revealed they were allegedly in possession of firearms and cocaine.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, the NAPS intelligence unit found and seized two shotguns, cocaine, cash and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking from the vehicle.

The two men were taken into custody without incident.

The 35-year-old and 33-year-old Wellesley residents were both charged with the possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of the possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of careless storage of a firearm and the possession of over $5,000 of proceeds of property obtained by crime.

The second man was also charged with two counts of failure to comply with the release order.

Both men appeared in court for a bail hearing on Friday and were remanded into custody with future appearance dates.
