DRYDEN — Ontario Provincial Police have charged the driver of a tractor-trailer, and the company that owned the unit, after an incident in the Dryden area on the weekend.

Officers were sent to investigate Saturday evening when reports came in about a transport truck vehicle losing one of its trailer wheels on Highway 17.

As a result, a 67-year-old resident of Vermilion Bay was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with operating a commercial vehicle with a major defect.

The owner was charged with operating a commercial motor vehicle from which a wheel became detached.

Police said a proper inspection of a vehicle before departing is critical to road safety, because losing a wheel at high speed can cause serious injury or death.

The charges have not been tested in court.
