IGNACE – The roadway and culverts of Pine Street are now in fine shape, thanks to more than $1 million in funding from the Ontario government.
“There are no questions that without the financial support of the province of Ontario, our small community would never be able to afford such significant repairs and replacement costs for key infrastructure projects that need to be completed in Ignace,” Mayor Kim Baigrie said Wednesday.
The province’s disaster recovery assistance program, managed by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, gave the township $1.04 million to finance the infrastructure fix-up.
Pine Street and its two culverts sustained significant damage from spring flooding in 2022.
The township announced the Pine Street project’s completion in June, opening the roadway to all motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
In its statement announcing the project’s completion, the township thanked Ignace residents “for their patience and ongoing support of our community infrastructure projects.”
“Helping residents and communities recover following a natural disaster is so important to us, and that is why our government activated this program,” Paul Calandra, Ontario’s municipal affairs minister, said Wednesday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project’s completion.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford, who is minister of northern development, was also at the event.
