EMO — Title this book The Little Library that Could (Maybe).

Emo Public Library, in danger of closing due to $20,000 to $25,000 in cost overruns, is near the halfway point in its keep-the-library open fundraising objective, its CEO and librarian said Wednesday.

“I’ve had a number of patrons who have heard me on the radio or saw me in the newspaper and decided to stop in and give whatever they can,” Nick Donaldson said.

Donors include the Emo Thrift Store, which has come through with $5,000.

In an open letter to Emo residents on Facebook, Donaldson said the library needs monetary donations to meet this year’s costs or “we will be forced to close our doors for the remainder of 2023.”

High insurance, utility and other costs “have put us in a particularly bad spot this year when most years the library is just barely scraping by,” Donaldson said last week.

The library’s closure would be negative for those who use it for internet access, photocopying and other services besides book borrowing, he said.

Donations can be made by cash or cheque, he said, adding that anyone interested in donating may contact the library with any questions about how.
