KENORA — The Kenora Islanders ownership remain committed to the Superior International Junior Hockey League.

The team, struggling on the ice with a 2-23-2 record, were scheduled to play a home game this past Friday night against the Dryden Ice Dogs and a road game the following night in Fort Frances.

The league announced Friday night’s game had been postponed and Saturday’s had been cancelled.

Team officials on Monday said circumstances simply didn’t allow the team to play on either night.

“This past weekend presented a series of unforeseen challenges. Our secondary home arena was unexpectedly shut down due to extreme cold weather conditions, which disrupted our operations. Additionally, a miscommunication with our transportation provider resulted in the cancellation of our bus service for Friday,” said team official Jack Dawson, in an emailed statement to Newswatch.

“Unfortunately, this extended to the entire weekend, and despite exploring all available options for alternative travel arrangements, we were unable to proceed with the scheduled games.”

The team, which also plays some of its home games at Woodland Arena in Vermillion Bay, is scheduled to play the Thunder Bay North Stars on Friday and Saturday night at Fort William Gardens.

“We remain fully committed to completing the season and competing in the SIJHL. Looking ahead, we fully intend to travel to Thunder Bay this weekend for our games against the North Stars. We are working diligently to ensure there are no further disruptions to our schedule,” Dawson said.
