THUNDER BAY — It could get wet, loud, windy and potentially dangerous in parts of Northwestern Ontario from Tuesday morning right into the evening.

Special weather statements or severe weather watches and warnings are in effect for much of the region including Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Atikokan, Sioux Lookout, Upsala and Armstrong.

For Thunder Bay specifically, a special weather statement was initially issued because of the potential for 30 to 50 millimetres of rain, and possibly even higher amounts.

This was later updated to a severe thunderstorm watch for late in the afternoon and into the evening.

Environment Canada meteorologist Gerald Cheng said a low pressure system moving slowly through the Northwest is bringing a threat of "severe storms and copious amounts of rain."

The area of concern stretches from east of Lake of the Woods to Thunder Bay and the Lake Nipigon region.

"Some places could get  up to 125 millimetres of rain, so that's something to take note of," Cheng said Tuesday morning.

"On top of that, there is the risk of severe storms. That brings other hazards such as hail and damaging winds, and even the risk of tornadoes. So, be careful out there."

He said the weather disturbances are likely to occur throughout the day as the system takes its time passing through.

"So this is just the first round of it. There will be more. This is not a good day necessarily to enjoy the great outdoors. Make sure you stay safe by keeping tabs on the weather."
