SIOUX LOOKOUT – The declining population of the honeybee is a global crisis. The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is doing their part to spread awareness on how to keep honeybee pollinating the environment.

The honeybee is responsible for pollinating nearly three-quarters of plants that produce 90 per cent of the world’s food supply.

“The honeybee is one of the most vital species that plays the essential roles as one of the major pollinators, thus ensuring food and food security, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity,” said Doug Lawrance, Mayor of Sioux Lookout. “I do hereby proclaim the month May and June as “Honeybee Appreciation Months” in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.

Habitat loss, pesticides/herbicides, and diseases contribute to the declining population of the honeybee. Therefore, honeybee awareness month aims to educate the public on safe practices to coexist to sustain a healthy ecosystem.
