SIOUX LOOKOUT – Renovations at the Sioux Lookout Recreation Centre are progressing, but the municipality has extended the facility’s closure.

The delay in reopening is to “hold the contractors and suppliers accountable to deliver the quality products we agreed to under contract,” a Wednesday news release from the municipality said.

“Our community deserves excellent value for these investments, which will enhance our facility and user experience,” the release continued.

The arena and lobby will be open for ice programming as of Sept. 9, but there is no reopening date set for the fitness centre, which includes the gymnasium, squash courts, weight room and cardio room.

“While we hope to open some parts of the facility, such as the gym and squash courts, we cannot confirm when this will happen as we are still awaiting the completion of certain projects by contractors in those areas,” Meredith Culham, the municipality’s recreation and culture manager, said in an email.

Existing memberships will remain frozen until the facility fully reopens. Members are welcome to stop in at the centre at any time Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to pick up their membership packages and learn about protocol for when the facility reopens.

Updates will be posted on the municipality’s Facebook page and website as well as at the rec centre, Culham said.

Renovations have been hampered by supply problems and some work needs to be improved to “meet our standards,” she said.

“While this situation is not ideal for our community and users, we want to ensure that the project is completed to our high standards before reopening the facility,” she said.
