KENORA — Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into a serious injury suffered by an elderly man in Kenora earlier this year.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in a death or serious injury.
A news release Wednesday described a case in which a 72-year-old Kenora resident crashed his vehicle into his own residence last July while impaired by alcohol and operating a pickup truck.
OPP officers were dispatched to the house, and the man's wife allowed entry to a bedroom where he was sleeping.
When he woke up and rose to his feet, he lost his balance, fell against a wall, and fractured his arm.
Joseph Martino, director of the SIU, said that based on the agency's preliminary inquiries, it was appropriate to terminate the investigation.
"The impact of the man's arm hitting the wall is what broke his arm. The officers had nothing to do with it," Martino wrote in his decision.
"On this record, it was apparent that there was patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer was concerned."
The case is now closed.
