Stolen Atikokan vehicle leads to missing firearm

OPP said the stolen vehicle was recovered, but a shotgun still remains missing.

ATIKOKAN -- Rainy River District OPP say it appears a thief made off with a shotgun after abandoning a stolen vehicle near Ignace.

According to a release issued on Saturday, the suspect allegedly stole a vehicle from a residence in Atikokan. Police learned the vehicle was driven northward on Highway 622 and police located it on the route, just south of Highway 17 in Ignace.

Upon further investigation, it was learned a firearm was missing.

Police said the missing weapon is a Winchester 1200 model 12-gauge shotgun, with duct tape on the butt stock.

The public is being asked for any information regarding either the suspect or the firearm, and police say anyone who may have picked up a hitchhiker, or observed a hitchhiker in the area of Highway 17 or Highway 622 should contact OPP at 807-274-3322.

The investigation is ongoing.
