FORT FRANCES – In the late evening of January 7, Fort Frances Fire Rescue Service responded to a call for service at a detached dwelling with heavy smoke and fire billowing out from an upstairs window, according to Fire Chief Tyler Moffitt.
In a statement made on the Town of Fort Frances Facebook page, Moffitt said that 13 firefighters responded with a pumper truck, an aerial ladder truck, and a rescue pickup truck to extinguish the fire in an upstairs bedroom.
There were no injuries and everyone within the home escaped the fire, he said, adding that the fire's origin and cause are still being investigated.
"Meanwhile, I would like to thank all responding team members of the Fort Frances Fire Rescue Service, the OPP and the Fort Frances Power Corporation for their quick response to this incident. Well done!
“In addition, we are eight days into the new year, and Canada has already recorded multiple fire-related fatalities across our country. I would like to remind people to continue to practice fire safety in their place of residence by ensuring that working smoke alarms are installed on every level of their residence, and outside/near all sleeping areas.
"As well, for added protection, we highly recommend installing working smoke alarms inside each bedroom/sleeping area,” he added.
