RAINY RIVER — Tbaytel announced Wednesday they will soon be upgrading their cell phone service to 5G in Rainy River and Crozier, a rural township to the west of Fort Frances.
The upgrades are expected to cause service disruptions in those areas, according to the release.
While work on the upgrades is happening, Tbaytel warns customers cell service may be degraded and they may experience intermittent voice, text, and data outages.
“To minimize disruption, customers are advised to enable Wi-Fi calling if supported on their devices before work begins,” they said.
The utility does say that 911 service will remain in service and they do not anticipate a full outage.
The work in Rainy River is planned for Oct. 16 to Oct. 31 and in Crozier from Oct. 23 to Nov. 7.
Once the work is complete, Tbaytel said most customers can expect improved service however “customers with older devices that do not support VoLTE calling will lose voice service.”
Tbaytel customers who have concerns or are unsure whether their devices support VoLTE calling are encouraged to contact Tbaytel customer service or visit tbaytel.net/support.
