PIKANGIKUM — Ontario Provincial Police have laid a second-degree murder charge against a 17-year-old.
Police were called on March 27 to a location near Airport Road in the remote community, located about 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, about a person in distress. According to the OPP, 50-year-old Douglas Turtle of Pikangikum died at the scene.
At the time, police considered his death suspicious.
In a media release on Thursday, the OPP announced they classified Turtle’s death as a homicide and have charged a suspect accused of killing him.
Because the accused is under 18, police can’t name them under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The 17-year-old is in custody, police said, with an April 10 court date in Kenora.
Police said they continue to investigate and encourage anyone with information to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers. The police media release also thanked “the community of Pikangikum First Nation for their information that has assisted with the investigation.”
