Teens face aggravated assault charges in Eabametoong First Nation

The two teenagers appeared for a bail hearing on Friday and were remanded into custody with a future court appearance date.

EABAMETOONG FIRST NATION — A 16-year-old and 14-year-old male were charged with aggravated assault following a violent incident on Wednesday morning. 

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to the call regarding the alleged assault at a residential address in the community of Eabametoong, also known as Fort Hope First Nation.

An investigation found that numerous individuals were inside the home when a verbal altercation became violent between the victim and the accused, leading to the alleged assault of the victim by multiple assailants. 

Police, in a news release, stated it is believed the assailants used a blunt weapon during the assault.

Following the incident, the victim was transported to Thunder Bay for further evaluation and treatment. However, the exact extent of their injuries is currently unknown and is not believed to be life-threatening. 

As a result of a continued investigation, two youth suspects were identified, located and arrested in the community on Thursday. 

The oldest teen was charged with the possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, aggravated assault and three counts of failure to comply with a release order.

The younger suspect was charged with aggravated assault and two counts of failure to comply with a release order.

The two teenagers appeared for a bail hearing on Friday and were remanded into custody with a future court appearance date. 

The names of the youths will not be released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
