Three workers injured in Sandy Lake winter road collision

The injured people were working for Valard Construction on the Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project

NORTH SPIRIT LAKE FIRST NATION, ON — One person remains in hospital following a collision on the winter road network in Northwestern Ontario.

Three workers employed on the Wataynikaneyap Power transmission project sustained injuries Friday when a Valard Construction fleet truck came into collision with an oncoming semi pulling an empty trailer.

According to the company, the accident happened when the northbound Valard crew cab contacted the trailer of the southbound semi on a curve at the 80-kilometre marker on the Sandy Lake Winter Road.

Calgary-based Valard said in a statement that the injured workers were initially provided with care by the company's medical team, and were treated at the North Spirit Medical Clinic.

On Saturday, they were airlifted to more advanced medical facilities.

The nature of their injuries was not disclosed, but Valard said Tuesday that only one worker is still receiving treatment in hospital.

The company said it notified the appropriate regulatory authorities about the collision, that an investigation is ongoing, and that it is working cooperatively with authorities.

"Safety is the cornerstone of our company," the statement said. "This incident will be thoroughly reviewed, and any learnings will be shared and applied with our people."

When completed, the Wataynikaneyap project will link 17 remote First Nations to the provincial electricity grid.
