DRYDEN — Ontario Provincial Police have arrested two individuals on charges of abducting a child.

The arrests were made on Highway 17 in Dryden on Saturday after police conducted a traffic stop on a westbound pickup truck whose driver initially attempted to evade police.

When the man eventually stopped, officers found a five-year-old girl and her mother inside the vehicle.

East Algoma OPP in Blind River had issued a request for assistance on Jan. 15 when they received a report that the child was missing.

Her 47-year-old mother, from Mississauga First Nation, is now charged with abduction in contravention of a court order.

A 68-year-old man from Blind River is charged with abduction of a person under 14, flight from police, speeding, failure to stop for police, and driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available.

Both accused attended a bail hearing in Dryden and were remanded into custody.
