DRYDEN —Unifor is donating $175,000 to 74 women’s shelters across the country, including Hoshizaki House in Dryden, to mark the 35th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

The donations were made on Friday, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, a day to honour the 14 women killed at Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.

Unifor donated $2,300 to Dryden’s Hoshizaki House this year as “local shelters provide life-saving assistance as frontline crisis services to women and children who are living with domestic violence,” said Carol Jolicouer, chairperson of Unifor Local 324 women’s committee, in a news release. “Unifor's donations in Dryden and across Canada are going toward a very worthy cause and this ongoing support is greatly appreciated.”

Unifor Local 324 also represents 20 members at Hoshizaki House and president Katrina Peterson said violence against women has reached crisis levels in Canada.

“It is imperative we support Hoshizaki House and the life-saving role they provide for vulnerable women and children in the Dryden area,” she said. “There is a growing awareness of the problem, but unfortunately much work remains in keeping women and children safe from abuse.”
