THUNDER BAY — A fatal motor vehicle collision has closed Highway 17 from Sistonen's Corner to Upsala.
Thunder Bay OPP, Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the two-vehicle collision on Highway 17 involving a commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle at roughly 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the commercial motor vehicle did not report any injuries.
The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team and OPP Collision Re-Constructionists are assisting in the ongoing investigation at the scene.
In the meantime, the OPP reminds motorists a thorough investigation for any fatal motor vehicle collision takes time, resulting in a lengthy closure of the highway.
OPP are also asking anyone who doesn't need to travel to stay home when the road conditions are this poor.
If people do need to travel, the police ask locals to drive slowly and safely according to the winter conditions, as well as to ensure their vehicle has winter tires, lots of windshield washer fluid, gas and necessary emergency items before they leave.
And, as always, the OPP says people should check in when travelling with family or friends.
The highway reopened just after 5 p.m.
Story has been updated to include the fact the highway has reopened in both directions.
