Wake service being held for Deer Lake First Nation fire victims

Three men died in an Oct. 29 house fire in the remote fly-in community

DEER LAKE FIRST NATION — A wake service is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon for three victims of a tragic fire on Deer Lake First Nation, 320 kilometres north of Kenora.

Three men perished in a blaze that broke out on Oct. 29 in a residence, while several other people were injured.

The names of the deceased have been released in a social media post by a Deer Lake council member.

They were 33-year-old Kyle Meekis, 37-year-old Thomas Meekis, and 36-year-old Jamie Meekis.

Following the wake service at St. Andrew's United Church in Sioux Lookout, the victims' remains are to be flown home to Deer Lake on Wednesday.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office continues to investigate the incident.
