Wildfire smoke leads to air quality statement

Smoke from wildfires burning in Northwestern Ontario is expected to be noticeable in the air in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas this weekend.

THUNDER BAY -- A special air-quality statement has been issued for Northwestern Ontario, due mainly to smoke from wildfires burning throughout the region and beyond.

The smoke is expected to affect the area on Friday morning and may persist into the weekend for some areas.

Environment Canada said the impact could fluctuate from hour to hour and over short distances.

They warn that wildfire smoke can be harmful to people's health, even at low concentrations, adding people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing the health effects of the smoke.

If breathing becomes uncomfortable, one should stop or reduce their activity level.

Anyone with an HVAC system at home should use the highest-rated MERV filter and anyone spending time outdoors might consider using a well-fitted respirator-type mask.
