THUNDER BAY — A Webequie First Nation woman has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in relation to the 2022 death of a 21-year-old man at a south-side motel.

Taliyah Wabasse, 21, entered the plea on Friday at the Thunder Bay Courthouse.

She was one of three people initially charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ivan Achneepineskum, 21, who was found dead at the Kingsway Inn on Dec. 24, 2022.

Achneepineskum was from Marten Falls First Nation and had been staying in Thunder Bay with family. Police had been searching for the man after his family had not heard from him.

Also charged with Achneepineskum’s death are Draydin Bluecoat, 22, from Webequie First Nation, and Jayven Spence, 21, from Kasabonika Lake First Nation.

Bluecoat and Spence had a preliminary hearing on the second-degree murder charge in April and May of last year and on May 16, 2024, both accused pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were found guilty.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for both Bluecoat and Spence on April 28.

A sentencing hearing for Wabasse is expected to be set later this spring.
