Youth charged in homicide in Couchiching First Nation

A 16-year-old faces a charge of second-degree murder

COUCHICHING FIRST NATION — Rainy River District OPP, in partnership with the Treaty Three Police Service, have charged a youth in connection with a homicide on the Couchiching First Nation near Fort Frances.

In a brief news release Tuesday, police said members of the T3PS and paramedics responded at 4:30 Sunday morning to an incident at a local residence, where an individual was pronounced dead.

The subsequent investigation resulted in a charge of second-degree murder being laid against a 16-year-old.

The accused, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is being held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police said there is no threat to public safety at this time, but members of the public can expect to see a large police presence in the area while the investigation continues.
