With deep sadness, the family of James (Jim) Johnston, announces his passing on November 9, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on February 19, 1938, in Port Arthur, ON to Nonie and J.B. Johnston, parents he shared with his younger sister Marilee (predeceased), Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he met.
Jim's lifelong journey of love and commitment began with his teenage sweetheart, Marlene, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Together, they raised a beautiful family including their children Karen (Will) Quarrell, Paul (Shannon), and Krista (Chris) Moore. Jim's legacy continued to grow with the joy brought by his grandchildren Ashleigh and Devon (Cora-Lee) Quarrell, Alyssa and Aaron Johnston, and Reese Bartlett (Matt), and was further enriched by the arrival of his great-grandchildren Ty, Jaxon, Finn, and Evangeline Quarrell. Also left to mourn is his beloved dog, Louie, who was a faithful companion until the end.
Jim's passion for education was evident in his pursuit of academic excellence, earning both Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees from Lakehead University. His quest for knowledge continued even into his retirement, as he acquired a Graduate Certificate in Industrial Woodworking Techniques from Confederation College, earning the Dean’s Medal for Academic Achievement. Jim's professional life was devoted to shaping young minds as an Elementary Teacher, Coach, and Principal within the Lakehead Public School Board. His dedication to his students was unparalleled, and his impact as an educator is remembered fondly by many.
Just prior to retirement, Jim took great pride in building his own home and then after, a new camp on his cherished property at Shebandowan Lake, where many family memories were made. An adventurer at heart, Jim once cycled for 12 days to Belleville to meet his new granddaughter, a feat that spoke volumes about his determination and love for his family.
Jim's zest for life was evident in his athletic endeavours. Always an avid sportsman, he grew up playing hockey, football, and basketball. His competitive spirit also shone through in curling, alpine and cross-country skiing, cycling, tennis, and golf. He participated in numerous races, including the Sibley Ski Tour and the Thunder Bay Triathlon, always pushing himself to new heights.
His love of nature was cultivated during his teenage years in Quetico, working alongside his beloved cousin, Bob. These experiences instilled in Jim a profound appreciation for the natural world, a sentiment he carried throughout his life. Jim and Marlene also wintered in Florida for 15 years where they enjoyed their home, the heat, and activities with many good friends.
There will be a celebration of Jim's life on Saturday December 28th at 12 noon at the Da Vinci Centre in the Marco Polo Room. Friends and family are welcome. If friends so desire, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of their choice.
